Medical Nutrition Therapy for individuals with Diabetes or Renal Disease

This is a benefit covered by Medicare Part B

Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) coverage is now available for Medicare Part B beneficiaries with diabetes and non-dialysis renal disease. Medicare is offering MNT coverage to help beneficiaries lead healthier lives and to minimize risks of complications of these diseases.

Where Will These Services Be Provided?

Visits can be scheduled at one of the VNA locations (Butler, Saxonburg, Ford City, Vandergrift or Zelienople), at the physician’s office or at the patient’s home. Appointments for the MNT visit could be conveniently scheduled on the same day as the patient’s physician appointments.

What Services Are Covered By MNT?

MNT services may include:

• Nutritional diagnostic, therapeutic and counseling services
• Face-to-face nutritional assessments and interventions in accordance with nationally accepted protocols
• MNT services must be prescribed via a physician’s order or prescription
• Reimbursement can be made only when the services are provided on an outpatient basis and performed by a registered dietitian or nutrition professional
• Beneficiaries need not be a patient of the VNA Family of Services to receive MNT through VNA
• The benefit is NOT AVAILABLE to beneficiaries who are inpatients of a hospital or skilled nursing facility

How Is This Paid For?

Medicare co-payments and deductibles do apply to MNT. The patient will be responsible for a 20% co-pay at the time of the visit
