Who are Hospice Volunteers?
Men and women of all ages who attend Hospice volunteer training.
What do the materials and training cost?
All materials and training are currently being provided free of charge, as a service to our community.
Why do I need to attend training if I am wanting to volunteer?
All potential volunteers are expected to attend the entire training in order to become certified, even those with previous experience. This assures families that the people coming to see them have been screened and trained.
Is there anything I need to do for training?
Be willing to talk about your questions and concerns, but also willing to listen to everyone else.
What do I need to bring to training?
You should bring your driver's license as well as proof of car insurance coverage.
Will I visit patients in my area?
Patients are generally assigned to volunteers near their geographical location. If you are willing to travel outside of that area, the potential to be available to more patients is obviously greater.
Is there a minimum number of volunteer hours required?
No, but we ask volunteers to call in at least once a month to keep in touch.
Once I am trained, can I volunteer at any time?
Yes, but we ask that volunteers schedule their time with families and then notify the coordinator so that the Hospice team knows who is going to visit our patients and when.
What do volunteers do?
The main need for patients and families to have a volunteer is for respite. Volunteers listen and offer support. Volunteers provide companionship and supervision to the patient; allowing families to take a nap, catch up on reading, run errands, go to personal appointments, etc.
What if I am interested in volunteering but the training is too far away or does not fit into my schedule?
Contact us to let us know your availability for volunteer training and to discuss your options.
How do I register for training or what if I have other questions?
Call the Volunteer Coordinator at VNA Hospice at 724-431-3502
or within Pennsylvania 1-800-245-3042.
