Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteering for hospice is an extremely rewarding way to use your time to make a lasting difference in the lives of families in our community.
One of the most important services our hospice volunteers provide is respite for caregivers, allowing them time for errands, personal appointments, housework or rest. Volunteers also listen and offer companionship and support for both the patient and their loved ones. In addition, we have need for volunteers to serve as clerical support in the hospice office.
For more information about becoming a VNA hospice volunteer, refer to the frequently asked questions below or read our volunteer newsletter.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who can become a hospice volunteer?
Anyone age 18 or older who attends our volunteer training can become a volunteer.
What is the cost of training and materials?
All training and materials are provided by VNA free of charge as a service to our community.
Why do I need to attend training if I want to volunteer?
All prospective volunteers, even those with previous experience, are expected to attend the entire training session in order to become certified. This provides reassurance for our patients and their families in knowing that the people coming to see them have been screened and trained.
Is there anything I need to do to prepare for training?
Be willing to talk about your questions and concerns but also willing to listen to everyone else.
What do I need to bring to training?
Bring your driver's license as well as proof of car insurance coverage.
Will I visit patients in my area?
Patients are generally assigned to volunteers near their geographical location. If you are willing to travel outside of that area, please let us know so that we can make the best use of our volunteer resources.
Is there a minimum number of volunteer hours required?
No, but we ask volunteers to call in at least once a month to keep in touch.
Once I am trained, can I volunteer at any time?
Yes, but we do request that volunteers schedule their time with families and then notify the coordinator so that the hospice team is aware of who is going to visit our patients and when.
What if I am interested in volunteering but the training is too far away or does not fit into my schedule?
Contact us to let us know your availability for volunteer training so that we may discuss additional options.
How do I register for training?
The first step is to complete and submit the volunteer application. For more information, call our toll-free Customer Center at 1-877-862-6659.
